Septic Service in Half Moon, NC
Half Moon sits right outside Jacksonville’s city limits, and many of its homes have a septic tank and drain field in the yard. If yours does, here’s what to know.
Sewer or septic?
ONWASA, the Onslow Water and Sewer Authority, is the main water and sewer provider in the county outside Jacksonville. Its 2022 service maps, published in the county’s 2024 comprehensive plan, show water lines throughout the Half Moon area but very little sewer, so many homes here treat their own wastewater with septic.
Not sure which you have? Look for a sewer charge on your utility bill, or a tank lid or cleanout in the yard. No sewer charge usually means septic.
A Jacksonville address outside the city
Half Moon homes usually have Jacksonville mailing addresses, but the community is outside the city limits. City sewer serves homes inside the city, so a Jacksonville address doesn’t mean you’re on city sewer. If you’re not sure, check your bill or ask Onslow County Environmental Health whether there’s a septic permit on file for your property.
Slow-draining ground
Onslow County’s land use plans describe much of the county as nearly level, with a large share of soil that drains poorly. When drains slow down during a wet stretch, the drain field is often the part struggling. Cut back on water use, and if it doesn’t clear up as the ground dries, call.

My address says Jacksonville. Am I in Half Moon?
Possibly. Half Moon is an unincorporated community just north of the city, and many homes there use Jacksonville mailing addresses. What matters for septic is whether your home is connected to a sewer system. Check your utility bill for a sewer charge, look for a tank lid in the yard, or ask Onslow County Environmental Health about a septic permit for your address.
