Septic Service in Holly Ridge, NC
Holly Ridge has grown fast, and plenty of homes in and around it depend on a septic tank and drain field. Here’s what to know if yours is one of them.
Sewer or septic?
Holly Ridge partners with ONWASA, the Onslow Water and Sewer Authority, for sewer, but the lines don’t reach every home around town. The county’s land use plan noted that the surrounding Stump Sound area outside the sewer service area was treated by septic systems.
Not sure which you have? Look for a sewer charge on your utility bill, or a tank lid or cleanout in the yard. No sewer charge usually means septic.
Newer homes, new owners
With the town’s population more than tripling in ten years, a lot of Holly Ridge homeowners are on their first septic system. A tank that was installed with the house still needs pumping on schedule, and the first time is often overdue before anyone notices. If you don’t know when yours was last pumped, it’s worth having it checked.
Wet ground near the coast
Onslow County’s land is nearly level, drains slowly, and has a high water table, which the county’s land use plan cites as a limit on septic systems. When drains slow down during a wet stretch, the drain field is often the part struggling. Cut back on water use, and if it doesn’t clear up as the ground dries, call.

Holly Ridge septic questions
Who issues septic permits here?
Onslow County Environmental Health, at 234 NW Corridor Blvd. in Jacksonville, handles septic permits across the county: site and soil evaluations, permits to build a system, construction authorizations, and repair permits for failing systems. The county says a failing system can’t be repaired without a Health Department permit. Call (910) 938-5851.
I just bought a newer home in Holly Ridge. Does the septic tank need pumping already?
It depends on how long the home has been lived in and how many people live there. The EPA says most household tanks are typically pumped every three to five years. If the house is a few years old and has never been pumped, schedule it.
